When you think of your favourite day of the year what comes to mind immediately? Your birthday? Christmas? Grand Final? Bathurst? Easter has come and gone. ANZAC day is a few days away. All these days are very special days for the TWR family. However, what if I told you that in less than a month, you could be celebrating whisky from sun-up to sun-down?
If you are a fan of whisky, Australian whisky in particular then May 18 is the date to remember! World Whisky day 2019.
What’s on? Bloody heaps! Distilleries all over the country have jumped on board in a huge way to bring you great whisky and industry related experiences that you would never usually have the opportunity to be a part of. All at mind blowing prices too.
If you are on the mainland, the pick of the bunch would be the Booze, Blues & Barbeques event at the Black Gate Distillery in Mendooran New South Wales, which of late has gathered momentum cementing themselves with an almost cult following of fanatics.
The Black Gate event will be jam packed. Starting at midday and running through to midnight and frankly, you may need the 12 hours just to fit it all in. Hosts Brian and Genise invite you to the distilleries 10th anniversary and are pulling out all the stops. There will be live music and other entertainment, an assortment of smoked and barbeque meats along with sides on offer all day and night and there is a complimentary pick up and drop of service from accommodation in town. But the whisky is what you are there for and Brian is not going to disappoint.
Along with the entire list of Black Gate releases on pour, there will be whisky flights including an Islay exclusive; 2 offerings of Bruichladdich hand fills, a Kilchoman and a Lagavulin. Jose Dymenstein from Casa de Vinos in Port Melbourne has done up an “indy flight” including a 7year old Laphroaig, a 21 year old Ben Nevis, a 10 year old Ardmore from Liquor Library and a Sansibar Glenfarclas. As if that wasn’t enough Scott Fitzimons from the Oak Barrel is also putting together a ‘what’s hot at the moment ‘ flight for you all.
However, if you are a lady or gent from the Southern Isle do not despair. Not only do you have to block out May 18 in your diary, you may as well strike out the entire week! That’s right, Tasmania know how to celebrate and had way too much to offer to refine the celebrations to one day only.
From Monday and Tuesday you can be treated to a guided bus tour of the Northern distilleries and then Wednesday through Friday hit up the Southern producers. After you hop off the bus there is a number of night life spots that are hosting events to celebrate. You can find a full list here
If you search any of the major player’s websites you will find information about how they can accommodate you on the day of days. But we were contacted by Rex Burdon from Nonesuch Distillery and he was excited for us to tell you his plans.
“[We will be hosting a] very exclusive, very limited Whisky experience. Kicking things off with a tasting of 2 of our very small batch Whiskies including a dram of the exclusive Nonesuch Sloe Malt. Then it’s down to business as we invite [our visitors] to hand fill their own 200ml bottle straight from one of our small casks of Single Malt Whisky, theirs to take home and enjoy knowing they were the only person to ever handle that bottle of whisky. Their bottle will also carry a unique Nonesuch World Whisky Day label signed by the distillers and then by them as the bottler.” Says Rex.
There is a lot to look forward to regardless of where you call home. But don’t delay. Take your pick and book it in before the chance is gone.
And if you see me hanging around, please come and say G’day.
